Marcie Westwater
Marcie Westwater, 54, is a healthy wife and mother of two from Phoenix, AZ. Marcie lives a very active lifestyle and enjoys yoga and hiking. On December 6, 2022, the day after she completed a six-mile hike with friends in Sedona, Marcie began experiencing a cold sensation in her chest. Fortunately, she and her husband, Mark, own their own company and work in the same office. She called for her husband and asked him to drive her home to rest, an uncharacteristic request for this active mom. By the time her husband pulled the car up to the building entrance, she climbed into the backseat and instructed her husband to drive to the Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital immediately. Through years of yoga, Marcie had trained herself to be very in tune with her body. She could feel herself fading and told her husband she loved both him and her sons. Within minutes of arriving at the emergency department, Marcie went into cardiac arrest. Medical staff began chest compressions and defibrillations to stabilize her before rushing her to the catheterization lab. Upon arrival, Dr. Akil Loli, quickly identified Marcie was in cardiogenic shock and inserted the lmpella CP® heart pump to support her weak heart before placing a stent. Dr. Loli confirmed the cause of her heart attack as a spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD). After nearly two days of support, Marcie's heart function recovered and the the lmpella CP® was removed. Four days after entering the hospital, Marcie returned home to her family. Today, she has normal heart function and she is back to yoga and hiking. She is grateful for the lifesaving care she received at Abrazo Heart Hospital, and most importantly, her family.
